Apart from George Gershwin, perhaps no other composer wrote as many jazz evergreens as Cole Porter: songs like “Love for Sale”, “I Get a Kick Out of You”, “Begin the Beguine”, “You Do Something to Me”, “Night and Day”, “I Love Paris” and “You’re the Top” – to name just a few of the most popular – have been in everyone’s head for almost a century. And yet they have lost none of their charm and freshness. Fred Astaire, Bing Crosby, Judy Garland and Nat King Cole were among the composer’s first interpreters; later, hardly any star of jazz and entertainment – from Ella Fitzgerald to Oscar Peterson and Stéphane Grappelli to Frank Sinatra – missed an opportunity to include Porter’s songs in their repertoire.
Ever an ardent wanderer between musical worlds, Magdalena Kožená too has succumbed to the magic of the composer, who died in 1964, and is devoting an evening to his music in the Umsungen – The World of Vocal Music series. The versatile mezzo-soprano has invited to Berlin as her musical partner Ondřej Havelka and the Melody Makers. The name of the Czech group, which has dedicated themselves heart and soul to swing music of the era between the wars, can itself be understood as a tribute to Cole Porter – if anyone knew how to make melodies, it was he!
