Tour to Hamburg, Cologne, Belgium, Luxembourg and Austria

In February 2014, the Berliner Philharmoniker and Simon Rattle performed works by Brahms, Debussy and Georg Friedrich Haas in Hamburg, Brussels, Luxembourg, Cologne and Vienna. In Vienna, Nikolaus Harnoncourt was appointed honorary member of the orchestra.

A touching moment at the end of our tour: Before the acoustic rehearsal at the Vienna Musikverein last Friday, we welcomed Nikolaus Harnoncourt as an honorary member of the Berliner Philharmoniker. Since his belated debut in 1991, he conducted 29 programmes in 90 concerts together in Berlin and at the Easter Festival in Salzburg. In a brief speech orchestra board member Peter Riegelbauer said: “You have given us a new perspective on the works of the great masters of the 18th and 19th centuries. You have always aroused our curiosity about the stylistic realities beyond the scores. We are greatly indebted to you.”

Happy Cologne: There is not only a cathedral and a Philharmonie, but also many lovers.

A wonderful side effect of our tours: You experience a lot of great new architecture, such as the Philharmonie Luxembourg, whose official name is as beautiful as its design: “Etablissement public Salle de Concerts Grande-Duchesse Joséphine-Charlotte.”

Lost and found: On the way from Brussels to Luxembourg, our chief conductor gets stuck in a traffic jam and is picked up by the orchestra bus, which has prudently taken a different route.

Another picture from Hamburg – this time from the applause after our programme with Brahms’ Third Symphony, Debussy’s La Mer and dark dreams, the new work of Georg Friedrich Haas.

We’re on tour again! Our first stop is Hamburg with the beautiful Alster lake in the city center and an equally beautiful Laeiszhalle. In contrast, the lighting in the hotel elevator is pretty scary, as you can see in this picture with our trumpeters Gábor Tarkövi and Martin Kretzer.
