His career

  • Born in Liverpool
  • Studies at the Royal Academy of Music in London
  • 1974 to 1977 Assistant Conductor at the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Bournemouth Sinfonietta
  • 1977 opera debut at the Glyndebourne Festival, since then collaborations with various famous opera houses, for example the English National Opera, the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, the Netherlands Opera and leading international orchestras
  • 1980 Principal Conductor and Artistic Adviser, September 1990 to 1998 Music Director of the City of Birmingham Orchestra
  • 1981 to 1994 Principal Guest Conductor Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra
  • 1987 Conducting debut with the Berlin Philharmonic with Mahlers Sixth Symphony
  • Since 1992 Principal Guest Conductor of the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment and Artistic Advisor to the Birmingham Contemporary Music Group
  • Since 2002 Chief Conductor of the Berliner Philharmoniker and Artistic Director of Philharmonie Berlin
  • Distinctions: knighted by the Queen of England (1994), Shakespeare Prize by the Toepfer-Foundation Hamburg (1996), Albert Medal of the Royal Society of Arts (1997), Comenius Prize for his commitment to the education-project (2004), Schiller Spezial Prize from the city of Mannheim (2005), Golden Camera and Urania-Medal (2007), Order of Merit of the Federal Republik of Germany, Gold-Medal »Gloria Artis«, Premio Don Juan de Borbón de la Música (2009), Chevalier de la Légion d'Honneur (2010), Léonie Sonning Music Prize of the Léonie Sonning Music Foundation (2013)
