Conducting competition from 3 to 6 May 2021

The next recipient of the scholarship will be decided by a competition organised by the Karajan Academy at the Philharmonie Berlin from 3 to 6 May 2021 The candidates for the Siemens Conductors Scholarship have the opportunity to show their skills in three selection rounds. Application

Applications must be submitted via the online form by 24:00 CET on 10 March 2021.

Candidates are eligible to apply under the following criteria:

•    Preferably completed higher education studies
•    Maximum age on 3 May 2021: 35 years old
•   In the case of admission to the Karajan Academy, full-time presence in Berlin is required.

The following documents must be attached to the application:

•    Copy of higher education qualification (if available)
•    Curriculum vitae
•    At least two video recordings of the candidate conducting an orchestra. The videos should meet the following requirements:

  1. The candidate should be seen from the perspective of an orchestral musician.
  2. The sound must be of sufficient quality to allow the preliminary jury to judge the applicant’s performance. Videos with very poor sound quality will be rejected.
  3. The videos should be available online (preferably on YouTube) via links.


By submitting the application, the applicant accepts the conditions of participation and the competition as well as the decision of the preliminary jury and the jury as binding. The judges’ decision is final.

Invitation

The applications received will be assessed by a preliminary jury. The decision will be officially announced on the Karajan Academy website at the beginning of April and all applicants will be notified by email beforehand.

Following an invitation to the first round of the competition, candidates must submit the following documents:

  • Artistic biography in running text (600 to 1000 characters)
  • High-resolution portrait photo

On the first day of the competition, each candidate must submit a certificate of a negative Corona test result which is not older than 48 hours.

Acknowledgement of the competition conditions

By submitting the application, the applicant accepts the conditions of participation and of the competition as well as the decision of the preliminary jury and the jury as binding. The judges’ decision is final.

  • All applications will vetted and dealt with confidentially. The competition organisers reserve the right to request additional information from or about an applicant.
  • By submitting the application, the applicant agrees that all rounds of the competition may be recorded on film and photographed and used for the public relations of the Siemens Arts Program and of the Karajan Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker.
  • The applicant agrees that his/her biography and photo may be used for public relations purposes of the Siemens Arts Program and of the Karajan Academy.
  • Travel and accommodation costs cannot be covered. Candidates are responsible for organising their own accommodation and travel.
  • The selection jury decides on the applicants at its own discretion. The decisions of the selection jury are final. The competition organisers are also entitled to reject an application without giving reasons.

2.    Beethoven, Leonore-Overture No. 3 in C major, op. 72a
3.    Beethoven, Symphony No. 3 in E flat major, op. 55 “Eroica”
4.    Tchaikovsky, Variations on a Rococo Theme in A major, op. 33
5.    Debussy, Prélude à lʾaprès-midi dʾun faune
6.     Stravinsky, Concerto in E flat “Dumbarton Oaks”
7.    Rihm, Chiffre II: Silence to be beaten

In each round, the jury reserves the right to request the individual works in selected excerpts, individual movements or in their entirety.

Round 1 – 3 May 2021:

30 minutes rehearsal with two pianists on two pianos

40 minutes of rehearsals with the chamber orchestra of the Karajan Academy
