Biography
Martin Heinze, born in Wuppertal in 1965, began his musical career at the age of 16 with double bass lessons under Hans-Günther Hilgers at the Kreismusikschule Viersen. In 1984, he qualified to study double bass under Rolf Heister at the Folkwang Hochschule in Essen, which he later continued under Klaus Stoll at Berlin University of the Arts. In 1987, he became a member of the Sinfonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks, and in 1993 he joined the Berliner Philharmoniker.
In addition to his orchestral work, Martin Heinze is musically active in many ways, with a particular interest in historically informed performance practice as well as contemporary music and free improvisation. One focus of his work is the ensemble Nukleus, which he formed with the pianist Heike Gneiting and his colleague Jan Schlichte, and which is the only Philharmoniker ensemble devoted exclusively to contemporary music.
