Wilfried Strehle

Principal Viola

After completing his studies, Wilfried Strehle, a pupil of Emil Kessinger, Ulrich Koch and Tibor Varga, began his career straight away with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Along with his orchestra activities, he has a deep passion for chamber music: in 1976 he was a co-founder of the Brandis Quartet and also played with the Tibor Varga Chamber Orchestra, Consortium Classicum and Katsaris Quartet. Currently he is a member of the Berlin Philharmonic Octet, Philharmonic Virtuosi, Philharmonic Camerata and Trio Berlin.

The recording premiere of the last-named ensemble, comprising clarinet, viola and piano, was awarded the European Chamber Music Prize. In 2005 he and other colleagues formed the Berlin Philharmonic Sinfonietta. In addition, Strehle teaches in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Orchestra Academy and at Berlin’s Universität der Künste. He also gives master classes in Germany and abroad, and since 2006 has been a visiting professor in Belgrade.
