Richard Duven received his first cello instruction at the age of nine from Daniel Cahen in Wuppertal. From 1972 he studied at the Cologne Musikhochschule and in 1975 continued his studies with Wolfgang Boettcher at Berlin’s Hochschule der Künste. He gained his first orchestral experience in the German National Youth Orchestra (Bundesjugendorchester) in 1975 and in the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie in 1977. As a member of the Berliner Philharmoniker, he is naturally one of the »12 Cellists of the Berlin Philharmonic«, and he also belongs to the Scharoun Ensemble. As a soloist and chamber player he is especially interested in contemporary music.
