Prof. Christhard Gössling

Principal Trombone

»In this orchestra I have learned that an orchestra can only be of world class when many good musicians are constantly listening to one another, and that this quality is precisely what truly great conductors build upon.«

He always found the sound of the trombone to be the most beautiful of all, and so Christhard Gössling began studying the instrument with Willy Walther at the music academy in Detmold when he was 13. He was principal trombone in Cologne’s Gürzenich Orchestra before taking over that position in 1984 with the Berliner Philharmoniker.

Gössling is involved with various wind ensembles and he is also a teacher: in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s Orchestra Academy since 1985 and since 1995as a professor at Berlin’s Hanns Eisler Hochschule für Musik, which he has served as rector from the summer semester of 2000 to the winter semester 2007/2008. His hobbies include literature and sport. He is married to Silvia Gössling and has six children.
