The Berliner Philharmoniker mourn the loss of Stella Doufexis who died after a long illness on December 15 at the age of only 47. The mezzo-soprano had close ties with the Berliner Philharmoniker. She made her debut in Schubert’s opera Fierrabras under Claudio Abbado in 1997. This was followed by numerous guest performances, often on special occasions, such as the New Year’s Eve concerts in 1997, 2000 and 2006 and she accompanied the Berliner Philharmoniker on tour on several occasions.
Her last performance with the orchestra was in May 2013 in Mendelssohn’s Midsummer Night’s Dream, the concert at which Claudio Abbado also made his last appearance with the Berliner Philharmoniker. Ulrich Knörzer, a member of the orchestra board: “We are much saddened by the early death of Stella Doufexis. Our long collaboration was marked by great musical and human harmony. We will miss her as a wonderful artist and vivacious, warm-hearted colleague.”
