For health reasons, Lorin Maazel will not be conducting the concerts with the Berliner Philharmoniker planned for 4, 5, 6 and 7 June 2014. His place on the conductor's podium will be taken by Semyon Bychkov whose now almost 30-year-long collaboration with the orchestra began as a “stand-in”. In 1985, he took over the concerts of the indisposed Riccardo Muti at short notice and, as the press noted, made a “conducting debut of considerable calibre”. Since then, Bychkov has been a regular guest conductor with the orchestra. Instead of an all Richard Strauss programme, we will now hear his symphonic poem Don Quixote in the first part, then the "Great" C Major Symphony by Franz Schubert.
