The benefit concert given on the 20 February by the Berliner Philharmoniker has raised a total of € 115.000 for UNICEF work in Haiti. This comes from ticket sales for the concert in the Philharmonie and for the live webcast in the Digital Concert Hall and includes the proceeds from the sale of concert programmes and cash donations from members of the audience.
These takings and donations will go directly to UNICEF projects in Haiti which help children who have been affected by the disaster. These funds are used by UNICEF to provide food and drinking water, medical help, child protection, and to support the reconstruction of a working school system.
The orchestra is an International Goodwill Ambassador for UNICEF. Following the devastating earthquake in Haiti, the Berliner Philharmoniker, their artistic director Sir Simon Rattle and the pianist Mitsuko Uchida immediately decided to dedicate the concert on the 20 February to the victims of the earthquake and to donate all proceeds to UNICEF. In addition to this spontaneous relief action, the Berliner Philharmoniker, together with UNICEF, are working on a long-term aid project for children in Haiti.
