In February 2010, the German photographer and photo-journalist Jim Rakete went to the Berlin Philharmonie and turned his camera on each of the players in the Berliner Philharmoniker. The individual portraits of orchestral musicians that resulted from those sessions have now been collected and published in book form, complemented by biographies of the artists. The photo book is now available for €18.95 at the Philharmonie shop as well as from the onlineshop.

The photographer’s approach to his subjects is described by Frederik Hanssen in his foreword to the illustrated volume: “No spotlights, no staging. Daylight. A chair. The characteristic grey background that’s become his trademark – Jim Rakete needs nothing more than this to approach the Berliner Philharmoniker. His aim is to show them not as stars of classical music but as human beings.”
