The Berliner Philharmoniker and the Japanese public enjoy a close and long-standing friendship, dating back to a tour in 1957 when Herbert von Karajan brought the orchestra to Japan for the first time. In the words of Olaf Maninger, principal cellist and member of the orchestra’s Media Board: “It has always been a source of great joy for us to witness the tremendous enthusiasm and musical understanding that Japanese audiences bring to our concerts. And now, when we’ve opened a new chapter in the Berliner Philharmoniker’s history with our Digital Concert Hall, Japanese music lovers are maintaining their faithful support: just as we expected, most of the foreign visits to our video platform are from Japan.” The “Berliner Philharmoniker Lounge” and www.hmv.co.jp is another step towards deepening this intercontinental musical partnership.
