For Magdalena Kožená it is both a dream role and a challenge: the seductive Carmen in Bizet's opera of the same name. At the 2012 Salzburg Easter Festival which takes place from 31 March to 9 April, the mezzo-soprano is to make her debut in the role, under the baton of Sir Simon Rattle. She is joined by the tenor Jonas Kaufmann as Don José, Micaela will be sung the soprano Genia Kühmeier, and Escamillo by the bass-baritone Kostas Smoriginas. The production will be by the British director, choreographer and dancer Aletta Collins.
The Berliner Philharmoniker have also invited other international artists for their concert performances: the pianists Murray Perahia and Emanuel Ax as interpreters of Robert Schumann’s Piano Concerto and Beethoven’s Opus 19, and the soprano Kate Royal and the baritone Christian Gerhaher, who will sing the solo parts in Gabriel Fauré’s Requiem. Anne Sofie von Otter and Jonas Kaufmann are the soloists in Gustav Mahler's Lied von der Erde. Moreover, Zubin Mehta conducts performances of Anton Bruckner’s Symphony No. 8.
In the chamber music series “Kontrapunkte”, the Scharoun Ensemble Berlin and other members of the Berliner Philharmoniker perform music by French composers. Tickets for the opera performances and concerts by the Berliner Philharmoniker in Salzburg are available from the ticket office of the Salzburg Easter Festival.
