Programme

Members of the Berliner Philharmoniker are known not only for playing in the orchestra with a passion, but also for performing as soloists and in chamber ensembles. This also applies specifically to the orchestras three 1st concertmasters, to whom a series of chamber music concerts is dedicated this season. Each of the three has teamed up with a well-known pianist for his concert and put together a programme of works for violin and piano. We start with Daishin Kashimoto and Myung-Whun Chung.

Daishin Kashimoto has worked as a soloist with many major orchestras worldwide. Nevertheless, he says, for him it is “a huge honour to be a part of this excellent orchestra. Making music at such a high standard simply makes me happy, in a sense it gives me the feeling of being emotionally complete.”

Myung-Whun Chung made his piano debut at the age of seven, and in 1974 he won 2nd prize at the renowned Tchaikovsky piano competition. And although he began his musical career as a pianist, this was soon followed by an international conducting career. Born in Seoul, South Korea in 1953, he worked for many years in France at the Paris Opera and as conductor of the Orchestre Philharmonique de Radio France: “My wife and I love the lifestyle and sophistication in France. Paris is very close to our hearts due to the wealth of cultural and artistic opportunities there.”

Myung-Whun Chung appears for this concert at the side of Daishin Kashimoto as a pianist. The two musicians’ programme includes violin sonatas by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Johannes Brahms, works which require a highly sophisticated and intimate style of playing.
