2 March 2014: Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach's birthday

300 years ago, on the 8th March 1714, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach was born as the second son of Johann Sebastian Bach. In the service of Frederick the Great, he remained in Berlin and Potsdam for decades. But not as a traditional court musician rather he gained renown as a modern artist, reflecting on this own music, putting his "feelings" onto paper, composing a standard work on the piano as well as organizing concerts. We celebrate C. P. E. Bach with a musical-literary matinee presented in both - words and sounds.

22 June 2014: Strauss Matinee

Born 150 years ago Richard Strauss is counted as a one of the principal conductors and composers who supported the Berlin Philharmonic in the first decades of its existence: in 1888 the then 24-year-old, with the orchestral fantasy From Italy made his debut at the helm of the fledgling elite orchestra to which he remained loyal right up to 1939. “The Philharmonic Orchestra is the smartest, freshest orchestra that I know of”, he enthused after his debut. The anniversary Matinee highlights the close relationship between the composer, Berlin and the Philharmoniker.
