For the first time, the education department of the Berliner Philharmoniker is holding its young composers workshop OPUS ONE! Young people up to 19 years from all over Germany - whether students, apprentices, or young people in military or community service - can apply with their own chamber music compositions using the same instrumentation as Benjamin Britten’s Chamber Symphony, Sinfonietta Op. 1.

Up to four applicants will be invited to Berlin to participate in a composition class from 28 to 30 March 2014. The intensive weekend includes analysis and discussion, as well as the development of works in direct consultation during rehearsals with musicians of the Berliner Philharmoniker and students of the Orchestra Academy of the Berliner Philharmoniker. On 30 March, the selected compositions will be premiered by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and students of the Orchestra Academy.
First performance by professionals
The selected compositions which will be rehearsed during the workshop, will be performed by members of the Berliner Philharmoniker and students of the Orchestra Academy at the end of the workshop weekend in the Hermann Wolff room of the Philharmonie at 6 pm on 30 March 2014. A professional audio recording of the concert will be available to workshop participants after completion.
Duration of the composition: approx. 10 minutesDeadline for submissions: 13 January 2014 (date of postmark)
Submissions: Please submit the legible score (in notation, text or graphics) with title page, name and address (3 copies either by post or a PDF by email!) also a short CV and a copy of your student card or a certificate of military or community service. Only works composed by yourself may be submitted. Compositions which have already won awards may not be submitted.
Travel costs: The cost of getting to rehearsals, the first performance, and corresponding overnight stays will be refunded to participants the composition class.
