Introduction: 7:00 pm

Performances by Leif Ove Andsnes appear to be inspired by the chilly landscape of the Norwegian fjords: clear, structured, daring, poetic, colourful and transparent at the same time. Born in 1970 on the island of Karmøy, the musician who was pianist in residence with the Berliner Philharmoniker in the 2010/2011 season, is undoubtedly one of the exceptional artists of today – although he certainly is not a piano-extremist or iconoclast: Andsnes rejects no long-held, well-founded traditions. His qualities are in the best sense “classic” playing, whose expressive emotion is held in check by a deep inner peace – not for nothing was he named “the most sophisticated pianist of the new generation” by the New York Times a few years ago. Leif Ove Andsnes now presents Berlin audiences with an exclusively Beethoven programme which, in addition to Beethoven’s Variations in F major op. 34, also includes the “classical” Sonatas in B flat major op. 22, and A major op. 101. With the Appassionata in F minor op. 57, he then turns to a highly expressive work that occupies a special position in Beethoven’s sonatas – a work which, according to the musicologist Willibald Nagel, takes us to “a world of dark passions, profound mental torment, ardent hopes and the staunchest and most savage defiance. [...] Struggle from the outset, terrible, violent eruptions, a gigantic rebellion against demonic powers, the bitter woe of a quivering human heart.”
