Programme

Johann Sebastian Bach is the focus of this Advent season concert for which the Berliner Philharmoniker have invited musical friends of many years standing, the internationally renowned German violinist Frank Peter Zimmermann and the Berliner Barock Solisten, to perform in the Philharmonie. They will be joined by two members of the orchestra itself: 1st concertmaster Daishin Kashimoto, who on this occasion assumes the double role of conductor and soloist, and principal oboist Jonathan Kelly.

The programme includes a choice and festive selection of instrumental works by the composer, about whom no less than Ludwig van Beethoven allegedly said, “He should have been called ‘ocean’ instead of ‘brook’,” – a play on words as the German word ‘Bach’ means ‘brook’ – “because of the infinite, inexhaustible richness of the tone combinations and harmonies in his music.” Evidence for this theory is offered by, among others, the two Violin Concertos and the Concerto for 2 Violins from the composer’s years in Köthen, and a reconstruction of the Double Concerto for oboe and violin which has survived only in Bach’s own arrangement for two harpsichords.

In addition to these four concertos, the programme includes two works for organ from Bach’s time as Cantor of the Thomasschule in Leipzig, which Heribert Breuer has arranged for orchestra, a practice common also in Bach’s time.
