Chamber Music

Jazz at Berlin Philharmonic with Michael Wollny, Markus Stockhausen and the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker

Under the title “Monteverdi meets Morricone”, the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker will devote themselves here to known and less known works of music history, effectively and innovatively arranged by Geir Lysne. The string players have got reinforcement in this process from the young German jazz pianist Michael Wollny and from Markus Stockhausen, who as solo trumpeter, improviser and composer is just as at home in jazz as he is in contemporary and classical music.

Programme

The Norwegian saxophonist, composer and arranger Geir Lysne is one of the most innovative leaders in his field, both in Norway’s classical orchestra landscape and in jazz. He enriches jazz to an unprecedented variety of colours with unusual arrangements using the most diverse instruments. On the basis of his unfamiliar instrumentation tricks and his extensive recourse to world music contexts, he succeeds in creating a new and unmistakably urban-feeling music where global diversity sounds like it had always belonged together inseparably.

The 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker have also time and again presented extremely ingenious arrangements of works of various musical genres in their concerts. The string team, perfectly attuned to each other through many years of practice, wows their audience on 48 strings, from low C to four-line harmonics. Under the title Monteverdi meets Morricone, the 12 Cellists of the Berliner Philharmoniker will devote themselves here to known and less known works of music history, couched in a new sound shape by Geir Lysne. The musicians will be supported in this process by Markus Stockhausen, who as solo trumpeter, improviser and composer is just as at home in jazz as he is in contemporary and classical music.
