Introduction: 7:00 pm

Leszek Możdżer, born in 1971, is considered one of the internationally outstanding jazz pianists of his generation – not least due to his pioneering hybrids between jazz and classical music. Known as the great romantic of his discipline, he joins a sparkling, rarely achieved way of striking the keys with melodies full of lyricism and emotion. In so doing he produces a “unique sound that remains brilliantly articulated even in the darkest melancholy fogs, as only a classically trained pianist succeeds in doing”, “from gently striking trembling to powerfully surging sounds” (Der Tagesspiegel). It comes as no surprise then that in his home country the musician has been selected by the magazine Jazzforum as the country’s best pianist almost every year since 1994. At a guest performance in the Chamber Music Hall, Leszek Możdżer will perform jointly with the Polish Atom String Quartet, one of the few string quartets with a solid command of the jazz vocabulary. As Możdżer did, the four musicians in the Polish group had a classical education – whereby they have enough power and energy to outplay even a rock band. The impression often arises that various wind, keyboard and percussion instruments are also playing along in the Atom String Quartet. That’s because the four musicians Dawid Lubowicz, Mateusz Smoczyński, Michał Zaborski and Krzysztof Lenczowski truly succeed over and over again in eliciting all those multi-coloured sounds exclusively from their string quartet instruments.
