Adrian Marthaler (born in 1947) spent over 30 years working for Swiss television as a producer and director in almost all areas, from “entertainment” to “music, dance theatre”. With the music editor Armin Brunner, he developed a new way of realising music on television. Many of his music films have won major awards. In 2008 he was responsible for a spectacular, televised performance of Verdi’s La traviata in Zurich Main Train Station. For several years, Marthaler has also been working as a director of opera. His most recent productions were Rossini’s William Tell and Mozart’s Così fan tutte at Zurich Opera. At the end of August 2013, his television production of Mozart’s Abduction from the Seraglio will be performed in Hangar-7 at Salzburg airport as part of the Salzburg Festival. In 2011, we inaugurated our philharmonic film series with Marthaler’s film Mahlers Sechste – Das Lied von der Vergänglichkeit. Since then, selected works by the Swiss artist have been shown regularly. This season, we continue this presentation of his works with more films and will show four films this evening: Le Boeuf sur le toit (music by Darius Milhaud), Brandenburg Concerto No. 2 in F major, and two more titles which have yet to be decided. The screening in the Hermann-Wolff room offers as always a rare opportunity to experience these productions outside of television and to be able to discuss them – if all goes well – with the director himself.
