Programme

When Ferruccio Furlanetto auditioned for the part of King Philip II in Don Carlo for Herbert von Karajan in 1986, he was – by his own account – under “great pressure”. The audition was scheduled for 1 pm, but it wasn’t until about 9 pm that the Italian singer was called. “Nonetheless, it was the best audition I ever sang.” The next day Karajan sat down at the piano to accompany Furlanetto, “with real enthusiasm… Within a couple of hours my life had completely changed.” Today Ferruccio Furlanetto is among the most sought-after singers in the world, on the opera stage and as a concert artist and recitalist. His Berlin programme – partnered by the Ukrainian pianist Igor Tchetuev, with whom he has already appeared at La Scala in Milan and at St. Petersburg’s Mariinsky Theatre – will include Modest Mussorgsky’s grotesque and fantastical Songs and Dances of Death. “His music springs from the soul of the Russian people and is characterised by grief and sadness.” The same could be said of the songs of Sergei Rachmaninov, written between 1890 and 1916, to which Ferruccio Furlanetto lends his opulent, dark basso. “A composer’s music”, said Rachmaninov, “should express the country of his birth, his love affairs, his religion, the books which have influenced him, the pictures he loves. It should be the product of the sum total of a composer’s experiences.”
