Peter Riegelbauer studied in Nuremberg with Georg Hörtnagel and in Berlin with Rainer Zepperitz. For three years he played in the Junge Deutsche Philharmonie and during this time was a co-founder of the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie and the Ensemble Modern. A scholarship to the orchestra’s Academy was his stepping-stone to the Berliner Philharmoniker. As the new institution’s first graduate, he passed his audition on 8 January 1981, his 25th birthday. In 1983 he and his Philharmonic colleagues founded the Scharoun Ensemble of Berlin. From the beginning of his membership in the Berliner Philharmoniker, Peter Riegelbauer has taken an active role in supporting the orchestra’s independence through participating in its administration: currently he is on the Orchestra Board and the Institute Board.
