Armin Brunner
Born 1945 in Basel
1st Violin

»For me it is a source of deep satisfaction to belong to this orchestra and to be a part of moments in which 128 individual musical personalities bond in a shared musical language.«
His mother often played chamber music with a former pupil of Carl Flesch. That inspired Armin Brunner to learn the violin himself. He studied with Wolfgang Hock and then at the Basle Music Academy with Sándor Zöldy. From 1967 until entering the Berlin Philharmonic he was a member of Camerata Bern and leader of the Lucerne Festival Strings. Another decisive influence on his artistic development was Paul Sacher, conductor, patron and director of the Academy and the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis, who brought composers like Pierre Boulez, Henri Pousseur and Klaus Huber to Basle. Sacher stimulated in Brunner an abiding interest not only in contemporary music but also in historical performance practice. Armin Brunner’s commitment to the orchestra is matched by his love of chamber music. He was a co-founder of the Scharoun Ensemble, played in the Haydn Ensemble and belongs to the Philharmonic String Soloists as well as the “Swiss of the Berlin Philharmonic”. His free time is occupied with literature and art history. He finds relaxation in the Engadin mountains of south-eastern Switzerland and in Italy.
