Orchestra Academy

Herbert von Karajan had the idea of a programme within the orchestra, to take responsibility for training highly qualified new musicians for the Berliner Philharmoniker. In 1972 the Orchestra Academy was founded as an institution whose aim would be to equip extraordinarily talented young musicians to meet the requirements of the Berliner Philharmoniker and other leading international orchestras. Tutored by members of the orchestra, they acquire unique skills and experience.

Karajan’s idea became reality thanks to the initiative of a small circle of culturally minded members of the business community, patrons who over the years have continued their enthusiastic support for this institution, assuming responsibility for the greater part of the Academy’s financial requirements.
